GH Mumm Champagne was founded by three German brothers in 1827 in the town of Reims. The three brothers, Jacobus, Gottlieb and Phillip Mumm were no strangers to the wine trade, they came from a successful wine maker and merchant family in the Rhine valley. The brothers identified an opportunity and quickly set about creating a flourishing Champagne house using their knowledge, connections and cash reserves. From the outset the brothers implemented a strategy for Mumm champagne about emphasising excellence in everything they do, from the vineyards, the pressing, vinification and cellars, this became a moto that literally translates to ‘only the best’.

By the early 1900’s Mumm had become the largest champagne house producing over three million bottles a year. The Mumm champagne had remained a family business until after the end of World War I, when the French government confiscated the entire estate and all its assets. Whilst the Mumm family has lived in the Champagne region for almost 100 years they had never actually become French citizens; the French government at the time confiscated any German’s assets to help repay from the devastation caused during the war. The brand is now owned by the French spirits group Pernod Ricard.

Mumm branding is famous for its red ribbon that adorns all bottles, this resembles the red sash of the highest possible accolade of the French Legion, the Grand Cross. A symbolic display that only a champagne of the highest standards could display a sash that is also used to honour the very highest standards of the Legion.
