Asbach’s brandy history starts in 1892 when its founder Hugo Asbach built his distillery in the town of Rudesheim am Rhein producing domestic “Rudesheim cognac”, which was a huge commercial success in Germany. After the 1st World War ended and the Treaty of Versailles decreed that only the French products produced in the Cognac region could be called “Cognac”, Hugo Asbach changed the name of the brandy to “Weinbrand” which in 1923 became the official classification of the German brandy. Asbach Uralt is the most famous and well-known German brandy but Asbach also produce a range of age statement products like Asbach 8 year old and Asbach 15 year old.
Asbach is produced using finest German wines, a two stage distilling process sees the wines distilled to a base spirit of approximately 40% ABV, followed by a more complicated distillation to accomplish the Asbach fine spirit, at approximately 75% ABV. Asbach only use the heart of the distillation as this has the best characteristics and later could be develop into Asbach’s distinctive tatse . Asbach ages all its spirits at the foot of the Black Forest in maturing cellars where it rests in small Limousin oak casks, drawing the aroma and colour from the cask in the ageing process.
In traditional pubs across Berlin area, Asbach is served as “Futschi”, mixed with cola products, making one of the best traditional long drinks in Germany. Who ever knew Brandy and Coke could have such an exotic name.
