Hennessy Cognac was founded in 1765 by Irishman Richard Hennessy, who retired as an officer in the army of Louis VX. Settling in the Cognac region Richard’s idea was to start a business distilling and exporting Cognac to Ireland and the United Kingdom, ended up being a rather prosperous idea. Hennessy has strong family traditions and relationships, and when Richard’s son James, appointed Jean Fillioux as master blender he started a relationship that has seen a member of the Fillioux family hold the position of master blender right through to the current, a legacy of over 250 years and 8 generations.
In the world of Cognac, Hennessy were interlinked with Martell through a number of family member marriages, and whilst they always remained competitors the businesses would make joint decisions on the pathway of Cognac and share ideas and production initiatives like the regulations behind what makes a VSOP cognac.
Hennessy is known for holding the largest collection of cognacs in its cellars containing more than 470,000 casks some of which are extremely rare and valuable but have been put to good use for the creation of prestige bottles of Hennessy Paradis and Hennessy Ricard.
