Gran Centenario tequila was created in 1895 by Lázaro Gallardo, the founder of Jose Cuervo. Its name was intended to commemorate both the start of a new century and to honour the 100th anniversary of Mexican independence from Spain in 1910. Originally produced to sell within Gallardo’s tavern the tequila was sold direct from barrels and it was only in 1920 that the brand was bottled to be sold for wider consumption. The Gran Centenario logo features The Angel of Independence, which appears on the Mexican Centenario 50-peso gold coin that was minted to commemorate its hard-fought independence, the bottle design took inspiration from the art deco movement of the 1920’s, the decade of its first bottling.
Gran Centenario Tequila is a blend of different batches of spirit, including some aged Tequila reserves, designed to produce Centenario’s unique aroma and taste profile. Gallardo used a proprietary process of blending old, smooth Tequilas with fresh spirit to ceate a product of exceptional quality and taste. This process of blending is known as Selección Suave. Gran Centenario produces plata tequila, reposado tequila, anejo tequila and extra anejo tequila. The products available are Gran Centenario Plata, Gran Centenario Reposado and Gran Centenario Anejo.
