Jose Cuervo tequila was founded by Don José Antonio de Cuervo in 1812, the La Rojeña distillery is the oldest active distillery in the whole of Latin America. The Cuervo family story starts in 1758 when they were issued a land grant by King Ferdinand VI of Spain, and it was on this land where they founded the Taberna de Cuervo, a farm where they would harvest the blue agave plant. The entrepreneurial spirit that lead to the distillery was still on show when in 1880 Jose Cuervo was the first distiller to individually bottle tequila, little did they realise this decision would be the catalyst that would see Jose Cuervo becoming the first Internationally exported tequila and lead to Jose Cuervo being the world’s largest Tequila brand.

The Cuervo brand and distillery remains the original family business with the 11^th generation now in control. Through the generations the family names altered through marriage and is owned by the Beckmann family. The brand produces Silver tequila, Gold tequila, Reposado tequila and Extra Anejo tequila.

Jose Cuervo is best known for its Jose Cuervo Gold and Jose Cuervo Silver products, most people introduced to these products as a shot with salt and a bite of lime. The Jose Cuervo brand also produce excellent aged Tequila in Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Extra Anejo and Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Platino.

Jose Cuervo is owned by the Beckmann family who also own other tequila brands like 1800 tequila, Maestro Dobel and Gran Centenario, all of which are produced at the La Rojeña distillery. The Beckmann family also founded, created and developed Don Julio before selling it to Diageo in 2014. Whilst the Jose Cuervo brand is missing products like Reposado tequila and Anejo tequila, the owning company have normally released these through its other brands.
