Oyster Bay was founded in 1973 with the ambition of producing distinctive wines that expressed the character of New Zealand's unique growing regions. The winery became particularly famous for its Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, but its Chardonnay has also developed a strong reputation for combining vibrant cool-climate fruit with elegant texture and subtle oak.

Marlborough, located at the northern end of New Zealand's South Island, has a dry, sunny and temperate climate. Warm days provide the sunshine required for ripening, while cool nights help the grapes retain their natural acidity. This long, slow ripening period allows Chardonnay to develop concentrated varietal flavours while maintaining freshness.

The vineyards used for Oyster Bay Chardonnay include sites in the Wairau Valley and Awatere Valley. Their shallow sandy-loam soils over deep layers of free-draining river gravels provide excellent drainage and relatively low fertility, conditions that encourage the vines to produce concentrated fruit.

Fragrant aromas of white peach, ripe citrus and nectarine lead into a smooth and inviting palate where juicy stone fruit meets refreshing lime zest and crisp citrus. Subtle vanilla, toast and gentle spice from the French oak add complexity without overpowering the vibrant fruit character. The texture is creamy and rounded, balanced by lively acidity that keeps the wine fresh and focused. A lingering citrus and stone-fruit finish completes this beautifully approachable Marlborough Chardonnay.
